Friday football -- Middle, LCM lose again
The Middle Township and Lower Cape May Regional high school football teams are still searching for their first victories after both clubs lost games Friday night.
In Cape May Court House, Middle Township hung in for a half against mighty Holy Spirit, but the Spartans exploded for three touchdowns in the third quarter and eventually ran away with a 39-0 victory. Behind william Washington and Nick Hall, Holy Spirit rushed for close to 400 yards as it completely dominated the line of scrimmage against the Panthers. Washington ran for four touchdowns and Hall added another.
Lower Cape May dropped a 49-14 decision to St. Augustine Prep to fall to 0-4. The Caper Tigers were in a tight game early when Eric Halbruner ran 63 yards for a score to knot the contest at 7-7. But the Prep scored twice more before halftime to take a 21-7 lead and then put the game away with three third-quarter touchdowns. Steve Obst ran in from one yard out in the final quarter to account for Lower's second touchdown.
Wildwood gets its best chance for a victory so far this season Saturday afternoon when it travels to Clayton. The Clippers are on a 28-game losing streak. Wildwood has not won a varsity game since the 2002 season.
