local sports tidbits

Some local sports notes to pass along ...

Middle Township senior guard Danielle Barber goes into tonight's game at Wildwood Catholic just five points shy of 1,000 for her career. Even though the Crusaders are a pretty good defensive team, Barber is averaging close to 16 points so she shouldn't have a problem reaching the milestone tonight.

Good news for fans of the Wildwood girls basketball team ... star senior gaurd Shakiyrah Bishop WILL NOT be suspended for two games, which was originally thought to be the result of a flagrant foul she was whistled for against Salem earlier this week. Sources tell us that the official who made the call won't file the suspension paperwork with the state, thus allowing Bishop to play in the team's next game against Clayton on Friday.

Finally, some unfortunate news to report ... Wildwood Catholic athletic director Sal Zuccarello informed me today via voicemail that Crusader three-point star Allie Weiser, a junior, will be out for perhaps more than a year following a recent knee surgery. Zuccarello said Weiser, who plays soccer and basketball and is an outstanding pitcher in softball, will be out until perhaps through the 2008-09 basketball season.
