LCM girls edge Wildwood; other hoops news

Roy Wright is in his 11th season as coach of the Lower Cape May Regional girls basketball team and has gotten lots of big victories over the years. On Friday, though, he got his first ever over Wildwood.

The Lady Tigers nipped the Lady Warriors, 28-24, in an obvious defensive struggle at the Shootout at the Shore at Mainland Regional High School. Both teams shot miserably from the floor. But with the game on the line, Lower's Janzell Rodriguez made two free throws and later passes ahead to Lindsey Bryan for a wide-open layup to extend a two-point Lady Tiger to six and put the game away in the final 40 seconds.

Stephanie Dugan scored 11 points and Victoria Wermuth added nine for Lower Cape May (17-3). Wildwood (14-5) got 10 points and 17 rebounds from Latifah McNeal, although McNeal was limited to one point and six rebounds in the second half. The two teams combined to shoot a horrific 18 for 90 from the floor.

In other games from Friday ...
In a boys contest, Millville downed Cape May Tech, 56-54. Tech led by 10 points going into the final period but the Thunderbolts outscored the Hawks 21-9 in the final frame to roar back for the win. Jamie Coleman (17) and Gary Farrow (11) were each in double figures for Tech (9-12).

In another girls game from the Mainland Shootout, Wildwood Catholic dropped a 40-38 decision to the host Lady Mustangs. The Crusaders trailed by six going into the fourth period and couldn't complete a comeback attempt. The Crusaders Sally O'Donnell, who made five three-pointers, topped all scorers with 26 points in the loss. She also had an incredible 11 blocked shots.

In other news ...
A rumor that needs to be confirmed -- we'll find out Saturday afternoon when the Warriors play at Lower Cape May -- is that Wildwood junior Donny DeLeo could be out for the season with a foot injury suffered earlier this week. DeLeo had been scoring at an incredible clip over the last couple of weeks, averaging more than 20 points per game over a recent six-game stretch.
