Host patrol wins Margate Memorials

The Margate Beach Patrol was victorious on its home beach Friday night in the Margate Memorials for the first time since 1996. Carl Smallwood and Chris Graves claimed first place in the doubles row and AShton Funk was first in the singles row to lead Margate in the three-event competition.

Sea Isle City's Blake Trabuchi-Downey led his patrol to a third-place finish by winning the three-quarter mile swim, beating Wildwood Crest's John Maloy, who didn't finish in first place at a lifeguard event for the first time this summer.

Longport finished second in team scoring.

The event is a preview for the most prestigious lifeguard competition of the summer, the South Jersey Championships, which will be held Friday, Aug. 8 in Ventnor.
